What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small text file containing information such as how you interact with a website during your visit, any user preferences you may have selected and what device you are using. Note that a cookie consists solely of a text. It is not a programme and does not contain any virus.
When you visit a website, the text file is stored in your browser. There are two types of cookie, temporary and more permanent. Temporary cookies disappear as soon as you close your browser. The more permanent type are stored for a longer period, although even these have an expiry date.
Cookies are important if the website is to function properly and so that we can improve your user experience, however, you can always choose not to accept cookies or to erase those that have already been saved. Cookies are also used when we display content from another supplier, for example videos on YouTube. This type of cookie is called a third-party cookie.
Choosing not to accept cookies
If you want to remove previously stored cookies, instructions are available in your browser from Google Help.
Please bear in mind that if you disable temporary session cookies, the website will not function optimally.
You can learn more about cookies on the PTS website.
